one time, in college, i became best friends with an orange and white traffic barrel. it came home with me from the bar one night and took up residence in my cramped apartment, always quietly observing, taking note from afar and being supportive while still not getting in my way. then one day i moved out to a proper grown-up apartment and left it behind. i hope it doesn't resent me.
